Literature Text

Old Norse

Ask veit ek standa,
heitir Yggdrasill
hár baðmr, ausinn
hvíta auri;
þaðan koma döggvar
þærs í dala falla;
stendr æ yfir grœnn
Urðar brunni.

German

Eine Esche weiß ich,
heißt Yggdrasil,
Den hohen Baum netzt
weißer Nebel;
Davon kommt der Tau,
der in die Täler fällt.
Immergrün steht er über
Urds Brunnen.

English

An ash I know it stands-
It is named Yggdrasil.
High tree, sprinkled,
With white mud;
There from come the dews-
That fall on the dale!
It stands always green, above-
The source of Urd.
"Yggdrasil" is a Nordic folk song based on parts of the Norse Hâvamâl from the Edda

I like the progression of languages, translation to next. It gives me the chance to scratch a bit of my rust off and test how much I can understand in Mother Nordic and Father German before I flex my English muscles. I also like how cyclical the internal evolution of the languages from old Teutonic font gives the impression of organic interlocution. But enough of my rambling!
